Transitioning from Chemistry to Computer Science: My journey into AI
The Unexpected Pivot
My university education commenced in September 2017, with Chemistry as my chosen field of study. Like many, I was a bundle of diverse interests, but the mystique of scientific exploration had beckoned me towards Chemistry. However, as I delved deeper, I found that my enthusiasm didn't resonate with test tubes and periodic tables. Dissatisfaction clouded my days, and a sense of despair started to burgeon. Before the second semester could reach its midpoint, I bid farewell to The University of Ghana, albeit without a clear roadmap ahead—a decision that seemed unwise at the time. My core desire was to innovate, to dissect complex issues, and to be at the forefront of finding solutions to pressing societal challenges. The harsh reality was that a single misstep in the Chemistry laboratory could have serious ramifications, potentially landing one behind bars for incinerating a government lab, if not worse.
Thus began my quest for purpose. I devoured a plethora of books encompassing themes of purpose, innate gifts, and self-discovery. Two notable mentions among them are 'The Purpose-driven Life', and 'The Gift In You'. It was 'The Gift In You' by Dr. Caroline Leaf that became a catalyst for my paradigm shift regarding my career. The insights from this book unshackled the vast potential within me, urging me to align with my inherent abilities and interests. Fueled by this newfound clarity, I resolved to transition from Chemistry to Computer Science, a decision that echoed with my authentic self.
Stumbling Upon Data Science
As I was delving into Computer Science, I had a serendipitous encounter. A friend mentioned a data science opportunity with a company that was willing to sponsor his education and subsequent employment. But there was a catch – the field required a love for programming and math, two things my friend didn’t care much for. Sensing an opportunity, I started researching more about Data Science.
I spent countless hours on platforms like Quora and Reddit, reading about data science from experts in the field. Figures like Monica Rogati, LinkedIn's first data scientist, provided invaluable insights. These platforms offered a wealth of information that helped me grasp the potential and breadth of this burgeoning field.
Armed with a newfound passion for data science, I reached out to professionals on LinkedIn, seeking mentorship and guidance. One of them, Yvette Kondoh, was gracious enough to take me under her wing. Yvette provided not only technical guidance but also navigational advice in this new and exciting field.
Through my journey, I realized that my love for problem-solving and creation found a perfect outlet in data science. But I also found myself leaning more towards the engineering side of things, and that's when I discovered AI.
The Shift Towards AI
As I immersed myself in Data Science, I stumbled upon a field that combined my love for problem-solving and engineering – Artificial Intelligence. AI, with its blend of math, programming, and real-world problem-solving, felt like the perfect fit. So, I started diving deeper into this exciting field.
Despite its complexities, AI was not out of reach. I started with online courses on platforms like Udemy. These platforms made learning accessible and flexible, allowing me to balance my university studies with my self-guided exploration into AI. I applied my learning in real-time, undertaking projects that challenged and honed my understanding of AI.
My entry into the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was largely fueled by a natural affinity towards programming and a keen desire to unravel complex problems. However, I firmly believe that the allure of AI isn't restricted to those with a background in computer science alone. The field is vast and accommodating, offering a myriad of opportunities for individuals hailing from diverse academic landscapes. With the right blend of curiosity, learning resources, and perseverance, anyone can cultivate AI expertise and augment their skill set, becoming a force to be reckoned with in their respective domains. The journey may present its set of challenges, but the rewards, both personal and professional, are well worth the effort.
